1The whole earth had one language, and one voice belonged to all.
2As they journeyed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
3One said to another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them with fire.†They used brick for stone and bitumen for mortar.
4They said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top will reach heaven, and let us make a name for ourselves before we are scattered over all the earth.â€
5The Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the human beings had built.
6The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people and all have one language, and this is what they began to do. Now nothing they undertake to do will fail them.
7Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that each will not understand the voice of his neighbor.â€
8The Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city and the tower.
9Therefore its name was called Confusion, because there the Lord confused the languages of all the earth; from there the Lord God scattered them over all the earth.
10These are the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old when he begat Arphaxad, in the second year after the flood.
11Shem lived five hundred years after he begat Arphaxad, and he begat sons and daughters, and he died.
12Arphaxad lived one hundred and thirty-five years and begat Cainan.
13Arphaxad lived four hundred and thirty years after he begat Cainan, and he begat sons and daughters, and he died. Cainan lived one hundred and thirty years and begat Shelah. Cainan lived three hundred and thirty years after he begat Shelah, and he begat sons and daughters, and he died.
14Shelah lived one hundred and thirty years and begat Eber.
15Shelah lived three hundred and thirty years after he begat Eber, and he begat sons and daughters, and he died.
16Eber lived one hundred and thirty-four years and begat Peleg.
17Eber lived three hundred and seventy years after he begat Peleg, and he begat sons and daughters, and he died.
18Peleg lived one hundred and thirty years and begat Reu.
19Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he begat Reu, and he begat sons and daughters, and he died.
20Reu lived one hundred and thirty-two years and begat Serug.
21Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he begat Serug, and he begat sons and daughters, and he died.
22Serug lived one hundred and thirty years and begat Nahor.
23Serug lived two hundred years after he begat Nahor, and he begat sons and daughters, and he died.
24Nahor lived seventy-nine years and begat Terah.
25Nahor lived one hundred and twenty-nine years after he begat Terah, and he begat sons and daughters, and he died.
26Terah lived seventy years and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27And these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.
28Haran died in the presence of his father Terah, in the land where he was born, in the country of the Chaldeans.
29And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah.
30Sarai was barren and bore no children.
31Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram. He led them out of the country of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan. He came as far as Haran and settled there.
32The days of Terah in Haran were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.
