Abram went up from Egypt into the wilderness, with his wife, all that he had, and Lot with him.
Abram was very rich in livestock, silver, and gold.
He went from where he had come, into the wilderness as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been before, between Bethel and Ai,
to the place of the altar where he had made a beginning. There Abram called on the name of the Lord.
Lot, who traveled with Abram, had sheep, cattle, and tents.
The land could not accommodate them living together, for their possessions were many, and they could not live together.
There was a quarrel between the herders of Abram's livestock and the herders of Lot's livestock. The Canaanites and Perizzites then inhabited the land.
Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no quarrel between me and you or between my herders and your herders, for we are brothers.
Is not the whole land before you? Separate from me. If you go left, I will go right; if you go right, I will go left.â€
Lot raised his eyes and saw the whole surrounding region of the Jordan, that it was all well watered—before God overturned Sodom and Gomorrah—like the paradise of God, like the land of Egypt as far as Zoar.
Lot chose for himself the whole surrounding region of the Jordan and departed from the east. They separated from one another.
Abram settled in the land of Canaan. Lot settled in a city of the surrounding region and encamped in Sodom.
The men in Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful before God.
After Lot had separated from him, God said to Abram, “Raise your eyes and look from the place where you now are: toward the north, the south, the east, and the sea.
For all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.
I will make your offspring like the sand of the earth. If anyone can count the sand of the earth, your offspring too will be counted.
Arise, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.â€
Abram moved his tent, came, and settled beside the oak of Mamre at Hebron. There he built an altar to the Lord.
