After these things, a word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not fear, Abram. I shield you; your reward will be very great.â€
Abram said, “Master, what will You give me? I am departing childless, and the son of Masek, my household-born woman, is Damascus Eliezer.â€
Abram said, “Since You have given me no offspring, my household-born man will inherit from me.â€
Immediately a voice of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not inherit from you; the one who comes from you shall inherit from you.â€
He brought him outside and said to him, “Look up to heaven and count the stars, if you can count them.†He said, “So shall your offspring be.â€
Abram believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.
He said to him, “I am God, who brought you out of the country of the Chaldeans to give you this land to inherit.â€
He said, “Master Lord, by what shall I know that I will inherit it?â€
He said to him, “Bring Me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a pigeon.â€
He brought Him all these, divided them down the middle, and laid them facing one another; he did not divide the birds.
Birds came down on the bodies, on their divided pieces, and Abram sat down with them.
Around sunset a trance fell on Abram, and behold, a great dark fear was falling on him.
It was said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will sojourn in a land not their own. They will enslave them, mistreat them, and humble them four hundred years.
But I will judge the nation that they serve; afterward they will come out here with much baggage.
As for you, you will depart to your fathers in peace, buried at a good old age.
In the fourth generation they will return here, for the sins of the Amorites have not yet been filled up.â€
As the sun was setting, a flame appeared. Behold, a smoking furnace, and fiery torches that passed between these divided pieces.
On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates:
the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,
the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,
the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hivites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.â€
