1After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham, Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”

2He said, “Take your son, your beloved, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the high land. Offer him there as a whole burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you.”

3Abraham rose in the morning, saddled his female donkey, and took two attendants and his son Isaac with him. He split wood for the whole burnt offering, arose, went, and came to the place God had told him.

4On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance.

5Abraham said to his attendants, “Stay here with the female donkey. The boy and I will go over there, worship, and return to you.”

6Abraham took the wood for the whole burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac. He took the fire and the knife in his hand, and the two went together.

7Isaac said to his father Abraham, “Father!” He answered, “What is it, child?” Isaac said, “Here are the fire and the wood, but where is the sheep for the whole burnt offering?”

8Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself a sheep for the whole burnt offering, child.” The two went together.

9They came to the place God had told him. Abraham built an altar there, laid the wood on it, bound his son Isaac's feet together, and laid him on the altar above the wood.

10Abraham stretched out his hand to take the knife to slaughter his son.

11An angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”

12He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, since you did not spare your beloved son for my sake.”

13Abraham raised his eyes and saw one ram held by its horns in a sabek plant. Abraham went, took the ram, and offered it as a whole burnt offering in place of his son Isaac.

14Abraham named that place “The Lord saw,” so that they might say today, “On the mountain the Lord appeared.”

15An angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven,

16saying, “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord: because you have done this and did not spare your beloved son for My sake,

17I will surely bless you and greatly multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven and the sand on the seashore. Your offspring shall inherit the cities of their adversaries.

18All the nations of the earth shall be blessed in your offspring, because you obeyed My voice.”

19Abraham returned to his attendants. They arose and went together to the Well of the Oath, and Abraham settled at the Well of the Oath.

20After these things Abraham was told, “Milcah too has borne sons to your brother Nahor:

21Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of the Syrians,

22Chesed, Azau, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”

23Bethuel begat Rebekah. These are the eight sons whom Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother.

24His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tabek, Gaham, Tochos, and Mocha.
