1The serpent was the most shrewd of all the wild animals upon the earth that the Lord God had made. The serpent said to the woman, “Why did God say, ‘You shall by no means eat from any tree in paradise’?”

2The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat from the fruit of the trees of paradise;

3but from the fruit of the tree in the midst of paradise, God said, ‘You shall not eat from it, nor shall you touch it, so that you do not die.’”

4The serpent said to the woman, “You shall certainly not die!

5For God knew that on whatever day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil.”

6The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing for the eyes to see, and beautiful to contemplate. She took from its fruit and ate; she also gave some to her husband with her, and they ate.

7The eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

8They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in paradise toward evening, and Adam and his wife hid from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of paradise.

9The Lord God called Adam and said to him, “Adam, where are you?”

10He said to Him, “I heard Your sound as You walked in paradise, and I was afraid because I was naked, and I hid.”

11He said to him, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree, the only one from which I commanded you not to eat?”

12Adam said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me—she gave me some from the tree, and I ate.”

13The Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you beyond all livestock and all wild animals of the earth. On your chest and belly you shall go, and earth you shall eat all the days of your life.

15I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he will watch your head, and you will watch his heel.”

16To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply your pains and your groaning; in pains you shall bear children. Your turning shall be toward your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

17To Adam He said, “Because you listened to your wife’s voice and ate from the tree, the only one from which I commanded you not to eat, cursed is the earth in your works; in pains you shall eat from it all the days of your life.

18It shall bring forth thorns and thistles for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field.

19By the sweat of your face you shall eat your bread until you return to the earth from which you were taken; for you are earth, and into earth you shall depart.”

20Adam called his wife’s name Life, because she was the mother of all the living.

21The Lord God made tunics of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.

22God said, “Behold, Adam has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest he reach out his hand and take from the tree of life, and eat and live forever—”

23The Lord God sent him out from the paradise of delight to work the earth from which he had been taken.

24He drove out Adam and settled him opposite the paradise of delight, and stationed the cherubim and the turning flaming sword to guard the way to the tree of life.
