1When Jesus finished directing His twelve disciples, He moved on from there to teach and proclaim in their cities.

2John, hearing in prison about the works of the Christ, sent through his disciples

3and said to Him, “Are You the One who is coming, or should we expect another?”

4Jesus answered them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see:

5the blind receive sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised and the poor have good news proclaimed to them.

6And blessed is whoever does not stumble because of Me.”

7As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind?

8But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those wearing soft clothing are in kings’ houses.

9But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

10This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’

11Truly I tell you, among those born of women none greater than John the Baptist has arisen; yet the least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he.

12From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of the heavens suffers violence, and violent people seize it.

13For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.

14And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come.

15Let the one who has ears hear.

16To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces who call to the others,

17‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a lament, and you did not beat your breasts.’

18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’

19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a wine drinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom was vindicated by her works.”

20Then He began to reproach the cities in which most of His mighty works had occurred, because they did not repent:

21“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works that occurred in you had occurred in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes.

22Nevertheless I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.

23And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will descend to Hades! For if the mighty works that occurred in you had occurred in Sodom, it would have remained until today.

24Nevertheless I tell you, it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

25At that time Jesus answered, “I acknowledge You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You hid these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to infants.

26Yes, Father, because this was pleasing before You.

27All things have been handed over to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, nor does anyone know the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him.

28Come to Me, all who toil and are burdened, and I will give you rest.

29Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, because I am meek and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

30For My yoke is kind, and My burden is light.”
