1The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:
2Let the sons of Israel camp, each beside his neighbor, by formation and by the signs of their ancestral houses. The sons of Israel shall camp opposite, around the Tent of Testimony.
3Those camping first toward the east shall be the formation of Judah’s camp, with their army. The ruler of the sons of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab.
4His army, those registered, numbered seventy-four thousand six hundred.
5Those camping next shall be the tribe of Issachar; the ruler of the sons of Issachar is Nethanel son of Zuar.
6His army, those registered, numbered fifty-four thousand four hundred.
7Those camping next shall be the tribe of Zebulun; the ruler of the sons of Zebulun is Eliab son of Helon.
8His army, those registered, numbered fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
9All those registered in the camp of Judah, with their army, numbered one hundred eighty-six thousand four hundred. They shall set out first.
10The formation of the camp of Reuben, with their army, shall be toward the southwest. The ruler of the sons of Reuben is Elizur son of Shedeur.
11His army, those registered, numbered forty-six thousand five hundred.
12Those camping next shall be the tribe of Simeon; the ruler of the sons of Simeon is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.
13His army, those registered, numbered fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
14Those camping next shall be the tribe of Gad; the ruler of the sons of Gad is Eliasaph son of Reuel.
15His army, those registered, numbered forty-five thousand six hundred fifty.
16All those registered in the camp of Reuben, with their army, numbered one hundred fifty-one thousand four hundred fifty. They shall set out second.
17The Tent of Testimony and the camp of the Levites shall be raised in the middle of the camps. As they camp, so they shall set out, each beside his neighbor according to command.
18The formation of the camp of Ephraim, with their army, shall be toward the sea. The ruler of the sons of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud.
19His army, those registered, numbered forty thousand five hundred.
20Those camping next shall be the tribe of Manasseh; the ruler of the sons of Manasseh is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.
21His army, those registered, numbered thirty-two thousand two hundred.
22Those camping next shall be the tribe of Benjamin; the ruler of the sons of Benjamin is Abidan son of Gideoni.
23His army, those registered, numbered thirty-five thousand four hundred.
24All those registered in the camp of Ephraim, with their army, numbered one hundred eight thousand one hundred. They shall set out third.
25The formation of the camp of Dan, with their army, shall be toward the north. The ruler of the sons of Dan is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.
26His army, those registered, numbered sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
27Those camping next shall be the tribe of Asher; the ruler of the sons of Asher is Pagiel son of Ocran.
28His army, those registered, numbered forty-one thousand five hundred.
29Those camping next shall be the tribe of Naphtali; the ruler of the sons of Naphtali is Ahira son of Enan.
30His army, those registered, numbered fifty-three thousand four hundred.
31All those registered in the camp of Dan numbered one hundred fifty-seven thousand six hundred. They shall set out last, by their formation.
32This is the enrollment of the sons of Israel by their ancestral houses. The whole enrollment of the camps, with their armies, was six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty.
33The Levites were not registered together with them, as the Lord commanded Moses.
34The sons of Israel did everything that the Lord instructed Moses. So they camped by their formations, and so they set out, each beside his neighbor, by their divisions and ancestral houses.
