1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2He was in the beginning with God.

3All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being. What has come into being

4in Him was life, and the life was the light of humanity.

5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

6There came a man sent from God; his name was John.

7He came for testimony, to bear witness concerning the Light, so that all might believe through him.

8He was not the Light, but came to bear witness concerning the Light.

9The true Light, which gives light to every person, was coming into the world.

10He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, and the world did not know Him.

11He came to what was His own, and His own did not receive Him.

12But as many as received Him, He gave them authority to become children of God—to those who believe in His name,

13who were born not from bloods, nor from the will of flesh, nor from the will of a man, but from God.

14And the Word became flesh and pitched His tent among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the Only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15John bears witness concerning Him and has cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘The One coming after me has come before me, because He was before me.’”

16For from His fullness we all received, and grace in place of grace.

17For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

18No one has ever seen God; the only-begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father—He has made Him known.

19And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

20And he confessed and did not deny, and confessed, “I am not the Christ.”

21They asked him, “What, then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

22So they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”

23He said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ just as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24Now those sent were from the Pharisees.

25And they questioned him and said to him, “Why, then, do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26John answered them, saying, “I baptize in water. Among you stands One whom you do not know,

27the One coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.”

28These things happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

30This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who has come before me, because He was before me.’

31And I did not know Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, for this reason I came baptizing in water.”

32And John testified, saying, “I have beheld the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and He remained upon Him.

33And I did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘The One upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining—this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’

34And I have seen and have testified that this is the chosen One of God.”

35The next day John was standing there again, and two of his disciples,

36and looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”

37The two disciples heard him speaking and followed Jesus.

38Jesus turned and, seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi”—which, translated, means Teacher—“where are You staying?”

39He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying, and stayed with Him that day. It was about the tenth hour.

40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard from John and followed Him.

41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah”—which, translated, is Christ.

42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon, the son of John; you shall be called Cephas”—which is translated Peter.

43The next day He wanted to go out into Galilee. And He found Philip, and Jesus said to him, “Follow Me.”

44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found the One of whom Moses wrote in the Law, and the prophets also: Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”

46Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good be from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said concerning him, “Behold, truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!”

48Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

49Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.”

50Jesus answered him, “Because I told you that I saw you beneath the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

51And He said to him, “Amen, amen, I tell you all: you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
