1Before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that His hour had come to pass from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, loved them to the end.

2And while supper was taking place, the devil having already put it into the heart that Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, should hand Him over,

3knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He came out from God and was going to God,

4He rose from supper and laid aside His garments, and took a towel and girded Himself.

5Then He poured water into the basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

6So He came to Simon Peter, who said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?”

7Jesus answered him, “What I do you do not understand now, but you will understand after these things.”

8Peter said to Him, “You will certainly never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “Unless I wash you, you have no share with Me.”

9Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

10Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed has no need to wash except the feet, but is wholly clean. And you are clean, but not all.”

11For He knew the one who was handing Him over; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12So when He had washed their feet and taken His garments and reclined again, He said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you?

13You call Me the Teacher and the Lord, and you speak well, for I am.

14So if I, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.

15For I have given you an example, so that you also may do just as I did to you.

16Amen, amen, I tell you: a slave is not greater than his master, nor a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

17If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

18I do not speak about all of you. I know whom I chose. But so that the Scripture may be fulfilled: ‘The one eating My bread lifted his heel against Me.’

19From now on I tell you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I am.

20Amen, amen, I tell you: the one who receives anyone I send receives Me, and the one who receives Me receives the One who sent Me.”

21Having said these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, saying, “Amen, amen, I tell you that one of you will hand Me over.”

22The disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He was speaking.

23One of His disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining in Jesus’ bosom.

24So Simon Peter signaled to this one to ask who it might be of whom He was speaking.

25Leaning back thus upon Jesus’ chest, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”

26Jesus answered, “It is the one for whom I will dip the morsel and give it to him.” So He dipped the morsel and gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.

27And after the morsel, then Satan entered him. So Jesus said to him, “What you do, do more quickly.”

28But none of those reclining knew for what purpose He said this to him.

29For some thought, since Judas had the money box, that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

30So, having received the morsel, he went out at once. And it was night.

31When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man was glorified, and God was glorified in Him.

32If God was glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him at once.

33Little children, I am with you a little longer. You will seek Me, and just as I told the Jews, ‘Where I go, you cannot come,’ I now tell you also.

34I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I loved you, you also are to love one another.

35By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you have love among one another.”

36Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “Where I go, you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later.”

37Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for You.”

38Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Amen, amen, I tell you: a rooster will certainly not crow until you deny Me three times.”
